  • On November 1, 1755, an earthquake followed by a tsunami and a series of fires occurred, destroying 85% of the buildings in Lisbon and causing between 50,000 and 70,000 casualties (around 1/5 to 1/4 of the population).
  • Portugal is the oldest country in Europe. Its independence, recognized by the papacy, dates back to 1143, and its current borders have remained approximately the same since 1249, following the conquest of the Algarve.
  • During World War II, Portugal maintained a neutral position, and Lisbon became a hub for German, British, and American spies. There is a hotel in the city center that still has the secret passages they used.
  • Originally, the Tower of Belém was built in the middle of the Tagus River. However, due to the river’s evolution, it is now accessed from the riverbank.
